West Rainton cemetery is run by West Rainton & Leamside Parish Council (the burial authority) and is located in Chantry Place, West Rainton. The cemetery grounds border the A690 trunk road. It was opened in 1939 and extended in 1983. Although geographically located opposite St Mary’s Church graveyard, the Parish Council cemetery has no association with the Church nor vice versa. There are no Commonwealth War graves in the cemetery.
As the cemetery is managed by the burial authority, West Rainton & Leamside Parish Council, the Parish Council has a number of legal responsibilities it must comply with in the way it manages, maintains and operates the cemetery.
As such the governing document, West Rainton Cemetery Rules & Regulations, (see below) details all cemetery rules & regulations that come into effect on the 1st April 2025. This is published so that it is readily available to all interested parties and partners with whom the Parish Council works, including families, funeral directors, memorial masons and grounds maintenance contractors.
The Parish Council requires that anyone using the Cemetery observes these Rules and Regulations to enable the cemetery to be maintained to a safe high standard for the benefit of all visitors and those that work in the Cemetery.
